The Miracle of D-Flawless
There is no other gemstone quite like a diamond. It is found in the most remote places on earth, and the fact that it forms at all is something of a miracle. It takes about one ton of rock to recover less than half a carat of rough, making diamond one of the rarest and most desired gemstones in the world.
A diamond is a testament of endurance and strength—and not surprisingly, the ultimate symbol of love.
The 4 C’s of a Pietrafesa Diamond
Every diamond is unique, reflecting a remarkable journey from deep within the Earth to become a cherished object of adornment. While each stone has its own story, diamonds share essential features that enable us to evaluate and compare them. These features are known as the 4Cs: Carat weight, which measures the size; Cut, which determines how well it reflects light; Color, which assesses the presence of hue; and Clarity, which evaluates the presence of internal or external flaws.
Together, the 4Cs provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the quality and value of each diamond.
The Color
The GIA Color Scale spans from D, denoting colorlessness, to Z, indicating light yellow or brown hues. While gem-quality diamonds are often perceived as colorless, genuinely colorless diamonds are exceedingly scarce. The majority of diamonds in jewelry possess subtle yellow or brown tints.
Color grading involves a meticulous comparison of each diamond against a master set, with each letter grade signifying a specific range of color visibility. Pietrafesa exclusively selects D color diamonds to ensure an immaculate and pure white appearance.
The Clarity
The GIA Clarity Scale encompasses eleven grades, from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3). A carat, the unit of diamond weight, is 200 milligrams. Diamonds under one carat are measured in points, with one carat equating to 100 points—thus, 0.75 ct. is 75 points, and 0.50 ct. is 50 points.
Diamonds naturally form under intense conditions, making it exceedingly rare to find one without internal or external characteristics.
These traits, which result from their formation, aid gemologists in distinguishing natural diamonds from synthetics and simulants, and in identifying individual gems. Pietrafesa selects only IF (Internally Flawless) / FL (Flawless) clarity diamonds, ensuring each is devoid of natural imperfections and truly flawless.
The Carat Weight
Carat Weight is a precise measure of a diamond’s mass, with one carat being equivalent to 200 milligrams. For diamonds less than one carat, the weight is expressed in points, where each point is 1/100th of a carat. Therefore, a diamond weighing 0.75 carats is also described as 75 points, and a 0.50 carat diamond is 50 points.
The Cut
The GIA Cut Scale, essential for evaluating a diamond’s sparkle, spans from Excellent to Poor. The allure of a polished diamond emerges from its intricate dance with light, composed of three key attributes:
- Brightness: The collective white light reflected from both the surface and the heart of the diamond.
- Fire: The captivating color flares emitted by the diamond.
- Scintillation: The dynamic interplay of light and shadow, along with the sparkle observed as the diamond, light source, or viewer moves.
Proportions, symmetry, and polish are critical; they influence a diamond’s interaction with light, enhancing its brightness, fire, and scintillation. The GIA evaluates these aspects in standard round brilliant diamonds within the D-to-Z color range.
At Pietrafesa, we commit to excellence by exclusively using diamonds with an Excellent cut, ensuring each gem possesses the most vibrant and lively shine
Fluorescence
Diamonds may emit visible light under ultraviolet radiation due to fluorescence, which does not influence their color or clarity grades. However, diamonds with medium to very strong fluorescence can sometimes appear cloudy or milky, potentially affecting their transparency and value.
Pietrafesa hand selects diamonds with no fluorescence to ensure pristine clarity and maintain their intrinsic value as a lifetime investment.
